Silk, viscose and rayon rugs
These are not wool and they do not behave like wool. Water alone can mark them permanently. Do not clean them yourself with anything.

Professional rug, carpet and upholstery cleaner. Safe for wool and Oriental rugs.
Professional rug, carpet and upholstery cleaner. Safe for wool and Oriental rugs.
Carolyn X-TOL has been the professional's carpet shampoo for over fifty years, used by in-plant rug washers and on-site cleaning crews on the rugs people cannot afford to replace.
It is shampoo chemistry rather than an enzyme formula, which matters most on wool, silk and Oriental rugs. It lifts soil out of the fiber and rinses clean without the tacky residue that makes a rug re-soil faster than it should.
One bottle makes a great deal of cleaner. Diluted at 1:16 to 1:32 with warm water, a 16 ounce bottle produces up to four gallons of cleaning solution, and a gallon produces up to thirty two. For a set-in stain, use it at 50 percent strength as a pre-treatment spotter before you clean.
Works in extraction machines, with a brush and bucket, and by hand on upholstery. Made in the USA.

Dry soil comes out easily. Wet soil turns to mud. Vacuum thoroughly before anything else, both sides of the rug if you can lift it.
Mix a small amount at your working dilution, apply it to a hidden corner with a white cloth, and check the cloth for color transfer. Let it dry before you judge it. On an antique or a rug of unknown origin, do not skip this.
One part X-TOL to 16 parts warm water for heavy soil, up to 1 to 32 for routine cleaning. Use it in an extraction machine, or apply with a soft brush and blot. For a set-in stain, pre-treat the spot at 50 percent strength first.
Do not over-wet, especially on wool. Blot out as much moisture as you can, then dry with air movement and, if you can manage it, off the floor. Wool that stays damp is where browning and odor start.

A cleaner that tells you when to use someone else is a cleaner worth trusting the rest of the time.

A surface shampoo cleans the surface. Urine in the foundation of a rug needs flushing and controlled drying, and it needs someone with the equipment to do it.
If your test corner transfers color onto the cloth, stop. That rug wants an in-plant wash, not a bucket.
There is no shame in this. Professional rug cleaning exists for a reason.
Most households want the 16 ounce, and it stores well between uses. The gallon works out considerably cheaper per use, so it is the one to come back for once you know the product suits your rugs.

Makes up to 4 gallons of cleaning solution. Enough for several rugs, a few rooms, and the spills in between. This is the one most people want.

Makes up to 32 gallons. The size professional rug cleaners buy, and the one to reorder once you know you like it.
Not sure how to dilute it? The ratios are on the bottle, and the dilution calculator does the math for you.

I had two stains to deal with on a newer expensive white wool area rug. First a urine stain from my dog. The next one was red Kool-Aid from a sleepover. I tried everything and nothing was working. After two treatments with this product it's gone.
Worked great, got my wool rug super clean. Didn't seem to be any residue. Didn't have any problem with color bleeding or anything like that.
I thought that the bottle seemed small, but used it on my carpet at the ratio that was written on the bottle. I haven't seen my carpet this clean in years, and hardly used much cleaner at all.

Yes, and that is what it was built for. X-TOL is shampoo chemistry rather than an enzyme formula, and in-plant rug washers have used it on wool and Oriental rugs for over fifty years. Test a hidden corner first, as you would with anything on a rug that matters.

Yes. Mix at your working dilution and add it to the machine's solution tank following the machine manufacturer's guidance.
No. Rinsing clean without a tacky residue is the reason professionals use it, because residue is what makes a rug re-soil quickly after cleaning.
It cleans the stain. It is a shampoo, not an odor neutralizer, so urine that has soaked into the foundation of a rug needs a professional who can flush and dry it properly.
